I make no excuses for talking about local boy Luke Donald again this week. The manner of his win at Wentworth and the sheer brilliance of his skills as a golfer justifies his return to the number one spot in the world rankings.
During my visit to Wentworth, I managed to get a couple of interesting pictures of him on the practice ground. I thought it would be nice to share them with you and it also gives me the chance to make a couple of comments about his technique.
 Luke's Practise Movement | Luke's Perfect Backswing |
In the picture on the left, Luke is doing some practise drills with half swings. If you notice, his right foot is forward and his swings are 'shallow to his normal swing plane'. This is similar to how Cory Pavin used to make a flatter practise swing actually above the ball a few years ago, because he wanted to ensure that he wouldn't get too steep or out of plane with his swing. I also notice from this picture he uses the interlock grip and is in good company with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus who both use the same grip.
I must say that I am quite proud of the picture on the right capturing the right moment at the top of his perfect backswing. This is really one of the best actions on tour and real textbook stuff to observe. Notice the clubface at 45 degrees, the left elbow pointing down, the way he retains a great spine angle and, one thing I always love to see, his right knee remains slightly flexed the same as his address position.
Once again, with his short game it's not difficult to see why he's number one in the world, long may it last. I would love to talk to any of you about this golf swing when you come past the shop.
While mentioning Wentworth, Justin Sandler spent the tournament Sunday coaching all day on the PGA teaching zone in the tented village, giving free short lessons to promote the game. Well done Justin, I hear it was a very long but rewarding day!
Putting Master Class Just a reminder that the first of my free putting master class sessions will be held on Saturday 9th June at 10am. The content should appeal to all members with the emphasis on drills to train and improve your putting stroke. It would be fine to just show up on the day.
We are going to have a great putting weekend!
